In 2005, Manarch Health Sciences (founded in 2003) launched MonaVie, which would become one of the largest and most controversial multi-level marketing (MLM) companies on the planet.

MonaVie, pronounced “Mah-nah-vie”, created what it believed to be the best mix of organic fruits, including the powerful antioxidant açaí to make their purée both nutritious and flavorful.

A gentleman by the name of Ralph E. Carson was the original creator of the MonaVie juice, assuming the role of Chief Science Officer with Monarch Health Sciences after the launch of MonaVie in 2005.

The MLM piece of MonaVie came from Monarch & MonaVie Founder Dallin Larsen, a former executive of two other MLM firms (Usana and Dynamic Essentials). Larsen is the current CEO of the company.

MonaVie’s charity, MonaVie Operation Rescue (MORE) is directed by Katy Holt-Larsen, and was created to help families living in poverty in Brazil.

Criticism / Controversy

Several lawsuits have taken place between 2007 and 2008 between MonaVie and its competitors in the MLM industry. Most have been either dismissed by the court or settled out of court. This is often the case when fast-moving companies start taking away market share on a product or service. To survive, competitors must find ways to slow their competition’s pace or eliminate them altogether (it’s just business).

The main controversy is from consumers who believe that MonaVie is selling the “cure all”, best possible vitamin-rich product on the market. Studies have found that processed açaí actually contains less antioxidant power than pomegranate, yet we have yet to discover a complete purée as nutritious as MonaVie.
